I CAME TO with the steady gait of a horse under me, her hoofbeats loud in my ears, still ringing with my own scream. I did not open my eyes quite yet. Strong arms held me by my middle, gently, as if afraid to be caught there, but tight enough to ensure I would not fall. My long, wild hair was a curtain of the same blackness I had surfaced from.

I had reached Volos, though he had not looked like himself. A fissure of hope lit within me just as dread extinguished it. Unfortunately for me, Volos had chosen a clever disguise. His appearance was no different than the hundreds, the thousands of holy fools across Russia. Still, I had caught him. And that unlikely spot of green . . . I would find him. In any case, I would try. Blackness spread across my vision, and I was falling back into unconsciousness. But not before I felt a kiss, on the top of my head, fierce yet tender.

And I knew, I just knew, it was Vasily.

Later, I learned Noch had flown all the way back to camp, and Vasily had immediately set off for the village we had left not hours earlier, where I had lain unconscious by the swinging corpses while their souls wept bitterly over me.
